Last fall, while in Sault Ste. Maire, Ont. Canada, our car was broken into and two hiking/walking sticks were stolen (among a bunch of other stuff). I blogged about this at the time, but it ruined the vacation for me. One of the stolen walking sticks was purchased on clearance in Switzerland and so it was a bit of a souvenir. The other was a standard REI pole. This past Christmas, my parents gave us two new REI walking sticks. Today we decided to use the poles for the first time. Guess what? One is broken - not severely - the hand grip isn't properly connected to the rest of the stick. J thinks he can fix it with superglue, but that isn't the point. Bad memories emerged!
Anyway, I took these pictures of Emerald Lake with my cell phone camera so I was able to post them. Good photos of the same site will be uploaded later this week.

That's awful! REIs are good, but nothing beats carved walking sticks! Oak and maple are the best wood for the job, though they might be more difficult to acquire.
