When I was in college, I had a male floor-mate who was a huge Twins fan. He grew up in western Wisconsin, just over the border from the Twin Cities. I remember the 1987 World Series well because of his love of the Twins. Kirby Puckett's death yesterday got me thinking about this old "friend" of mine. He turned out to be a jerk to women. He constantly cheated on his girlfriends (who were mostly my friends) and he lied a lot. After he finished college, he stayed in our city for a short time before moving up here. This was after a friend of mine got pregnant, had an abortion, and was cheated on again. Needless to say, she was bitter for a while after their breakup. She happened to work in an office on campus and had access to student records. She looked up his records and discovered that while he told everyone that he graduated with two particular majors, he actually never finished college. I went to his "graduation" party. By the time this was discovered about him, my friends and I had mostly lost touch with him. He met another girl up here and got married and started having kids. We often wondered if he ever completed college or just went through life telling people he graduated. Yesterday, I googled him. I discovered he is a pretty high ranking marketing executive at a well-known local company. And, to make matters worse, he is still claiming to have graduated in the 1980's from the same school as me. Once a bastard, always a bastard.
